The first production held in the newly built Fr. A.T. Screen gymnasium was The King & I in 1998 with Joe Murray cast as the King and Nancy Kearney as Anna Leonowens.
Our 1999 production was "Annie" with the role of Annie triple cast (Jordan Posey, Kat Soulagnet and Gloria Cosenza) and Joe Gavin as Warbucks. The dress rehearsal below is a peek into the organized chaos that went into the making of these shows and in taking a cast picture.
The 2000 production was "Fiddler on the Roof" with Joe Murray and Greg Johnson sharing the role of Tevye and Mary Beth Haro as Golde. Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava were all double cast and because we had so many talented young ladies in the group, the roles of Bielke and Shprintze were portrayed by different actresses every night. And yes, those are real bottles balancing on the heads of our young dancers!
"Annie Get Your Gun" was the 2001 production with Tracey Collins cast as Annie Oakley and Joe Gavin as Frank Butler. The dress rehearsal outtake below is proof that delirium often set in as opening night approached. Dolly Tate never looked so rough around the edges!
In early 2002, we lost our beloved director, mentor and friend Bob Kearney to cancer. As a fitting tribute, the Players staged "The Best of Bob" which featured scenes & songs from all of the previous SPX Player productions. The Show & Song Sequences were projected up on a large screen to introduce each number. During intermission, as seen in the Best of Bob video below, the audience was treated to a presentation with more photographs and several well known "Bob-isms". Unfortunately, the sound quality in the video is poor and inconsistent throughout.
In 2003 we were off to see the Wizard with Mirais Holden and Ellen Kearney sharing the role of Dorothy, Mel Leveque as Oz, Paul Kearney as the Scarecrow and several other roles that were double cast. During all of the Pius shows, one of our many backstage staples was chilled bottled water.....never more appreciated or needed than with Wizard what with the mixture of stage lights, elaborate costumes and heavy makeup.
2004 found the Players in the South Pacific with Connie Quave as Nellie Forbush and Danny Pistorius as Emile deBecque. The video has some lagniappe scenes and photos at the very end.
The Sound of Music was our 2005 production with Dee Dee Johnson and Jan Groh double cast as Maria Rainer & Greg Johnson and Joe Murray as Captain Von Trapp. Fans of the Chicken Dance will want to watch this though til the end (thank you Joey Pistorius).
Cinderella was our 2006 production with Liz Rizzo and Nicole Gavin Laperouse sharing the title role, Andrew Antoine as the Prince, and Connie Quave as the Godmother.
In 2007 while the St. Pius X Church building was undergoing repairs and renovations, the gym and cafeteria served as the church and sacristy and the St. Pius Players went silent. We returned in 2008 with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Eli Timm had the title role with Connie Quave as The Narrator.
My Fair Lady was the 2009 production with Amanda McClain Bonfanti and Liz Rizzo sharing the role of Eliza Doolittle and Joe Gavin as Henry Higgins.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was our 2010 production with Paul Kearney in the title role, David Quave and Cade Martin sharing the role of Charlie Bucket, and one Oompa Loompa with a pituitary problem!
Bye Bye Birdie was the 2011 production with Stephen Kernion as Albert Peterson, Christine Johnson and Sara Stoehr double cast as Rose Alvarez, and Logan Breaux as Conrad Birdie.
